Episode Title: Stop Asking WHY: Perspective Alchemist Katie Kleuber on Beige, Better Questions & Permission

Host: Tony Babcock

Guest: Katie Kleuber

Episode Overview

What if the question everyone tells you to ask is the exact question keeping you stuck?

Perspective and Story Alchemist Katie Kleuber joins Tony Babcock for one of the most playful and unexpectedly profound conversations In the Spotlight has had yet. From Twinkies and milk to the rear-view mirror to the letter B, this episode makes you see the questions you ask yourself in a completely new light.

The central idea: “why” keeps you in your head. It keeps you beige. And there are better questions waiting.

About Katie Kleuber

Katie Kleuber (writing as Katie Pink) is a Perspective and Story Alchemist, author, and former division order analyst. She spent more than 20 years in oil and gas untangling chains of title before realizing her real superpower was untangling how people see things. Born in Alaska, raised across the United States and Grand Cayman, she is a lover of improv, a collector of extraordinary analogies, and the author of Beige Unless That’s You.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

  • Why “why” is the question that keeps you spinning instead of moving

  • The alphabet reframe: B is the 2nd letter; Y is the 3rd from the last. Where do you want to stand?

  • How to replace why with what, how, and so what, and why it changes everything

  • "Reasons are excuses in a fur coat": what reasons are really protecting you from

  • What the color beige has to do with your identity and your choices

  • How constant movement and improv shaped a perspective that sees around corners

  • What a 52-prompt permission slip disguised as a self-help book actually looks like

Standout Quote

“Reasons are excuses in a fur coat. They get all dressed up and act like they’re something they’re not.”

Episode Highlights

The Twinkies and Milk

A coworker once asked Katie the difference between a lease expiring and a lease terminating in oil and gas. Her answer, invented on the spot: milk expires; Twinkies only terminate if you eat them or microwave them. The coworker couldn’t put creamer in her coffee for months. This moment is the clearest possible window into how Katie’s brain works, and why she became a Perspective Alchemist.

Stop Giving Your Power Away to Why

The “know your why” movement asks a question that, according to Katie, never actually gets to the answer you’re looking for. When a real estate trainer kept pushing her on why she got out of bed in the morning, she said: because she was done sleeping. That’s not a cop-out. It’s a clue. Why puts blame outside yourself, stalls action, and begs for reasons. And reasons are excuses in a fur coat.

The Alphabet Reframe

Live and unplanned, mid-conversation, Katie looked at the alphabet and said: B (to be) is the second letter. Y (why) is the third from the last. Where do you want to stand in the conversation with yourself? Then she kept going: why is the rear-view mirror. Why is it so small? Because you’re not meant to spend most of your time looking backwards. Tony has been chewing on this ever since.

The Beige Problem

Beige is what you get when you mix all the colors and add a lot of white. It’s the neutral, the uncommitted, the “we’re all the colors and none of them at the same time.” And in life, asking why over and over keeps you mixing your colors into the same pot. The result: beige. Katie’s book is a permission slip to stop being beige. Or, as she puts it: beige is a great starting point. Put two beiges next to each other and you’ll start to see the differences.

Live Readings: Beige Unless That’s You

Tony picks pages 13 and 42 from the book live on air. Page 13: "You won’t know if it’s an anthill or a mountain hill until you reach the top." Page 42: "Does the door blame you for bumping into it?" Both land as perfectly as they sound, and they tie the entire episode together.
